Northwest Iowa Power Cooperative (NIPCO) recognized Nishnabotna Valley Rural Electric Cooperative (REC) Director, Don Applegate, with the distinguished “N-Ovation Award” during NIPCO’s virtual annual meeting on April 6th at the NIPCO Headquarters in Le Mars, Iowa. Since 1975, NIPCO’s Board of Directors honors those individuals for their outstanding contributions to the generation and transmission cooperative.

Don Applegate received the recognition in honor of his dedication to the rural electric cooperative industry which spans nearly one half-century.

A native of Oakland Iowa, Don was elected to the Nishnabotna Valley REC Board of Directors in August of 1966 and continues to serve as director for, now, fifty-five years.

The N-Ovation Award that was presented to Applegate represents the time and commitment made by the recipient to advance the cooperative industry.
Recipient Don Applegate is being congratulated by NIPCO's Exec. VP and General manager Matt Washburn. Applegate was officially presented his N-Ovation Award at the May Board of Directors Meeting for Nishnabotna Valley Rural Electric Cooperatives in Harlan.

Don was appointed as the Director Representative from Nishnabotna Valley REC to the NIPCO Board in 1974. Throughout his 45-year tenure on the NIPCO Board, Don served in the capacity of assistant secretary-treasurer, president, and vice president, while also serving for twenty years as the NIPCO director representative to the Basin Electric Power Cooperative Board of Directors. Don made significant contributions at the board table during an evolving era of the rural electric cooperative industry which has and continues to influence national and regional activity. At NIPCO, he was involved with making decisions regarding power supply, delivery, and reliability for the generation and transmission cooperative, while setting policy that supported cooperative governance, energy efficiency, economic development, and distributed generation.

Don’s exemplary service, spirit of cooperation, and his dedication to the rural electric cooperative program has shaped the industry through decades of unpredictable economic environments, regulatory challenges, and unprecedented events.

His ongoing service to fellow cooperative member-consumers is reflective of his commitment to the cooperative principles as he continues to work on their behalf as a director for Nishnabotna Valley Rural Electric Cooperative.

Woodbury County Director and NIPCO Board Vice President Ron Steinhoff presented the N-Ovation Award to Don, virtually. Don accepted, via the virtual platform, from the Nishnabotna Valley REC headquarters in Harlan, Iowa.

Don’s leadership as a member of the NIPCO Board of Directors earned him the respect of his colleagues and his contributions continue to be felt throughout the cooperative and the NIPCO membership.

The NIPCO staff and Board of Directors congratulate Don on being honored as the 2021 recipient of the NIPCO N-Ovation Award.
