NIPCO's Commitment to the Communities We Serve

NIPCO's commitment to providing outreach programs enables us to personally connect with the communities we serve. NIPCO demonstrates the seventh cooperative principle, Concern for Community, with annual donations of time, talents, and financial resources to several worthy non-profit programs, organizations, and charities that make a difference in western Iowa.

Through corporate, matching and individual donations, employees of NIPCO and its member cooperatives donate thousands of dollars and hundreds of volunteer hours to local needs centers, little leagues, educational institutions, and health and human services non-profit organizations. Here are a few other highlights of NIPCO's "Concern for Community":

NIPCO's Annual Touchstone Energy Golf Invitational

Each year, nearly 100 golfers spend a day in August on a golf course in western Iowa to raise thousands of dollars to benefit local community non-profit groups and charitable organizations, within the NIPCO service territory.

This past August, NIPCO's 17th annual Touchstone Energy® Midwest Golf Invitational brought NIPCO member distribution cooperatives, commercial and industrial accounts, and industry partners together for a day of golf and networking in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, all for the benefit of good causes in western Iowa.

The tournament, sponsored by NIPCO, its member cooperatives and regional business partners, raised over $7,700. These proceeds are returned to NIPCO’s member cooperatives to designate to local non-profit service organizations and charities of their choice.

Over the past 17 years of the golf tournament, NIPCO and its members have raised over $362,000 to benefit local charitable organizations.

The United Way

NIPCO has been proud to support the United Way through individual and corporate matching donations since 1995. In that first year, just over $2,000 was collected by NIPCO employees through regular payroll deductions. 22 years later, annual employee giving paired with NIPCO's corporate match, tops $8,000 per year. To date, NIPCO has raised nearly $110,000 that have been distributed to United Way agencies serving within NIPCO's service territory.

Angela, a NIPCO employee, explains to local media about NIPCO's annual Chamber Coffee in honor of the American Red Cross.

American Red Cross

NIPCO hosts a Chamber of Commerce Coffee to recognize the efforts of the American Red Cross. In 2016, this event occurred in September to bring awareness to “Disaster Preparedness Month”. Oftentimes, NIPCO works alongside American Red Cross volunteers to restore normalcy to communities in western Iowa, impacted by weather and other emergencies.

At the 2016 event, American Red Cross volunteers were on-hand to showcase their Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) along with local historical memorabilia which represents the American Red Cross’ century of service. Executive Director of the North and Western Iowa Chapter of the American Red Cross Tammy Lee spoke of the organization’s history and services offered to Americans.

This is the second Chamber Coffee NIPCO has hosted in honor of the American Red Cross in order to bring awareness to the positive impact they make to the communities served by NIPCO and its member rural electric distribution cooperatives in western Iowa. NIPCO presented a donation to the American Red Cross in the amount of $1,000 from NIPCO and NIPCO’s primary power provider, Basin Electric Power Cooperative.

NIPCO Matching Donation Program

In 2016, NIPCO matched nearly 40 requests from NIPCO staff and employees and directors from our member cooperatives. These 40 requests totaled 990.5 service hours and $1,800 in cash donations that were contributed to 35 charitable organizations that provide services throughout the NIPCO service territory. For each qualifying charitable donation of cash or service hours, NIPCO matches up to $50. As such, an additional $1,825 in matching donations were contributed to these 35 identified organizations by NIPCO.
